Blog for busy people: a quick and easy way to set your objectives for 2017 plus practical tips on how to find the time to achieve them

Most of us are familiar with the positive feelings and sense of satisfaction experienced when we achieve something in our personal or professional lives.

It’s not always easy to clearly identify our future goals. Appraisals and objective setting can sometimes feel like a bit of a chore, and when it comes to our personal life, well, it’s often overlooked.

I recently came across a new way to set objectives which makes the process much easier.  This suggestion is from the writer, author and speaker Laura Vanderkam

Pretend it’s the end of the year and that you are undertaking a self appraisal.  You have had an amazing year.  What three to five things did you do that made 2017 so amazing?  And I would add, notice how good you are feeling and what others have said to you.

I’ve got some good news for you. It just so happens that there is a hypnotic phenomenon that could really help here and make this technique even more powerful. It’s called Pseudo-orientation in time (POIT).  A trained hypnotherapist could guide you through this process, by helping you to imagine being in December 2017.  Enabling you to access your subconscious mind and discover what’s important to you and what you would really like to achieve. This will help you to have a more fulfilling life, as you will then be able to spend time doing the things that really matter to you, and that make you, and those around you happy.

Hang on a minute there’s a problem [I hear you think] “I am very busy, I really can’t fit in anything else”.

Last year I noticed a recurring theme, people telling me how busy they felt, clients, colleagues, family and friends, this even included people who had retired.  The pressure and the sense of feeling overwhelmed and “being so busy” almost felt like it had become part of our culture in London during 2016.  For the majority of individuals this appeared to be associated with a sense of loss of control, feelings of exhaustion and dissatisfaction. I didn’t hear many people say “I’ve been busy and achieved a lot”.

January is often a time for looking ahead.  We all have 24 hours in our day, time is one of the few resources that’s distributed equally. If we work 35 hours a week and sleep eight hours a night that leaves us with 77 hours a week in which we can do other things. That’s actually quite a bit of time.  We do have choices.  There is hope.  I believe that for the majority of people it is possible to fit in time to do more things that they enjoy and that are pleasurable, and work on things that they would like to achieve during 2017.

Practical tips for creating time, for yourself and your objectives include

  • Prioritising (this can be as simple as rating items on a list from 1-5 with 1 being top priority)
  • Put important/impactful/enjoyable things in your diary first
  • Plan ahead
  • Switch your mobile phone to flight mode for a few hours (personally I find this particularly useful)
  • Watch less TV
  • Align your to do list with your objectives
  • Take into account effort/time vs impact
  • Regularly review your to do list, some tasks may no longer be necessary, you can cross them off

I encourage you to seriously consider breaking away from what seems to have become an infectious habit within our culture.  Move from feeling busy and overwhelmed to feeling in control of the hours that you have each day. Not only can hypnosis help you identify your true goals that are meaningful to you, hypnotherapy can help with changing habits. Most of us know at least one person who has become a non-smoker after seeing a hypnotherapist. Consider learning some relaxation techniques, self hypnosis offers a quick route to deep relaxation.

You can make 2017 your best year yet.  You can spend time doing things that matter to you.  I hope that reading this has given you an opportunity to feel excited and enthusiastic about your future.

For many people Christmas is a very busy time, and it can be really quite stressful.

This year the first signs of Christmas were evident in October. It’s not a twelve day sprint it can be more like a three month endurance marathon.

Everyone’s Twelve days of Christmas will be different, for some it’s a lonely time of year, some might be facing their first Christmas after the loss a loved one. We will all have our own mix of things to do, emotions to deal with and hopefully some good times ahead too.

Imagine instead….

11    enjoying some peace

10    having a relaxing massage

9    trying a new therapy

8    many different therapists to chose from

7    gentle breaths for relaxation

Apple app, listen once a day and it might keep the doctor away

If you come across something which actually is awesome, how do you describe it?

Double awesome, amazing, incredible, truly awesome..….I don’t know.  I sat next to the man responsible for developing this Apple app  last week.  I can’t rate it highly enough.

This app teaches you to take yourself into self hypnosis, how cool is that. Not only that, but once you master self hypnosis you can then use it to motivate yourself to achieve your goals and deal with a range of other issues.

Learning self hypnosis using this Apple app is completely free of charge.

If you haven’t experienced hypnosis before and you aren’t familiar with the feeling of deep relaxation if brings, you might prefer to have a session or two of hypnosis with a hypnotherapist first to help guide you on your way.  If you wish to book an appointment with Patrick Browning, he works in central London.
