Short blog for busy people – the benefits of colouring

Colouring is very relaxing, within just a few minutes of picking up a coloured pencil or pen you will quickly find yourself absorbed in the activity.

It’s likely there’s a lot on your “to do” list…….this doesn’t need to be a barrier between you and relaxation.  Taking just a few minutes out from your busy schedule to do something completely different could bring all sorts of benefits. Usually people find as they chose a colour they like, and pick an image that appeals to them to colour in their mind and body begin to relax. Then the gentle tactile movement of the pencil or pen on paper is calming;  and very different to using a keyboard or touching a screen which is what many of us spend a lot of our time doing these days.

Take a moment to imagine doing some colouring…..feel the pen in your hand….what colour pencil or pen would you pick first…..what is your favourite colour….then think of what would be a lovely picture to bring to life…..a beach scene…..some trees or plants…..a patterned mandala…… it won’t be long before you notice that your breathing has slowed down and your muscles will have softened and you will feel calm and relaxed.

I’m a Hypnotherapist and I also I work as a part-time Co-ordinator at Breast Cancer Care.  In 2015 set up a lunchtime colouring group – Colour, Chat and Chill, the group was featured in our Vita magazine, Summer 2016 edition).  Click here and scroll down to page 21  to read “A picture of calm” by Georgia

If you have a colouring book at home and haven’t yet got around to picking up your colouring pens, then I’d encourage you to give it a go.

Perhaps you did a bit of colouring last year and haven’t picked up your pens for a while…….take a moment to remember how good it made you feel.

Time flies, it’s important to spend some time doing things that you enjoy.colouring-30-jan

As Georgia says in her magazine article why not pencil in some relaxation time for yourself?

Pick up your pencils, and let me know how you get on!

If you are struggling to find the time to fit in the things that you enjoy, you might find my Blog for busy people: a quick and easy way to set your objectives for 2017 plus practical tips on how to find the time to achieve them, is of interest.

PS August 2017 update, a big thank you to H who recently gave me something from the past, some colouring that I did way back in 1975!

I was moved that my thank you card had been kept for so long, and I was reminded of my life long love of cats!

Anne was a milliner, and regularly gave me off cuts of fabric. She was an exceptional lady and lived to over 100 years old.

Blog for busy people: a quick and easy way to set your objectives for 2017 plus practical tips on how to find the time to achieve them

Most of us are familiar with the positive feelings and sense of satisfaction experienced when we achieve something in our personal or professional lives.

It’s not always easy to clearly identify our future goals. Appraisals and objective setting can sometimes feel like a bit of a chore, and when it comes to our personal life, well, it’s often overlooked.

I recently came across a new way to set objectives which makes the process much easier.  This suggestion is from the writer, author and speaker Laura Vanderkam

Pretend it’s the end of the year and that you are undertaking a self appraisal.  You have had an amazing year.  What three to five things did you do that made 2017 so amazing?  And I would add, notice how good you are feeling and what others have said to you.

I’ve got some good news for you. It just so happens that there is a hypnotic phenomenon that could really help here and make this technique even more powerful. It’s called Pseudo-orientation in time (POIT).  A trained hypnotherapist could guide you through this process, by helping you to imagine being in December 2017.  Enabling you to access your subconscious mind and discover what’s important to you and what you would really like to achieve. This will help you to have a more fulfilling life, as you will then be able to spend time doing the things that really matter to you, and that make you, and those around you happy.

Fast Forward to the end of the year2017_01_07-fast-forward

Hang on a minute there’s a problem [I hear you think] “I am very busy, I really can’t fit in anything else”.

Last year I noticed a recurring theme, people telling me how busy they felt, clients, colleagues, family and friends, this even included people who had retired.  The pressure and the sense of feeling overwhelmed and “being so busy” almost felt like it had become part of our culture in London during 2016.  For the majority of individuals this appeared to be associated with a sense of loss of control, feelings of exhaustion and dissatisfaction. I didn’t hear many people say “I’ve been busy and achieved a lot”.

“Objectives” can sound quite business orientated, they are individual to you and a mix of personal and professional goals will lead to a balanced life.  For example, last year I learnt to crochet2016_07_31-crochetThanks Little Woollie and Chitter, Chatter Craft

January is often a time for looking ahead.  We all have 24 hours in our day, time is one of the few resources that’s distributed equally. If we work 35 hours a week and sleep eight hours a night that leaves us with 77 hours a week in which we can do other things. That’s actually quite a bit of time.  We do have choices.  There is hope.  I believe that for the majority of people it is possible to fit in time to do more things that they enjoy and that are pleasurable, and work on things that they would like to achieve during 2017.

Practical tips for creating time, for yourself and your objectives include

  • Prioritising (this can be as simple as rating items on a list from 1-5 with 1 being top priority)
  • Put important/impactful/enjoyable things in your diary first
  • Plan ahead
  • Switch your mobile phone to flight mode for a few hours (personally I find this particularly useful)
  • Watch less TV
  • Align your to do list with your objectives
  • Take into account effort/time vs impact
  • Regularly review your to do list, some tasks may no longer be necessary, you can cross them off

I expect you have other ideas and strategies too.  I’d love to hear about what works for you.

I encourage you to seriously consider breaking away from what seems to have become an infectious habit within our culture.  Move from feeling busy and overwhelmed to feeling in control of the hours that you have each day. Not only can hypnosis help you identify your true goals that are meaningful to you, hypnotherapy can help with changing habits. Most of us know at least one person who has become a non-smoker after seeing a hypnotherapist. Consider learning some relaxation techniques, self hypnosis offers a quick route to deep relaxation.

You can make 2017 your best year yet.  You can spend time doing things that matter to you.  I hope that reading this has given you an opportunity to feel excited and enthusiastic about your future.

If you would like further help and support feel free to email me today and we can discuss how hypnosis can help you live the life you want to live.

I wish you all the best for 2017.

A lecture on the importance of sleep ..boring…yawn…yawn…yawn…prefer to read something else….

2015_12_31 Marble man lecturing 4

Well I understand that, sleep routines, sleep hygiene all sound a bit dull I agree.

You don’t need me to tell you the benefits of having enough good quality sleep, young or old, if we get a good night it’s likely we will wake up feeling good, we benefit emotionally and physically – it’s good news for those around us too.  Most people will have experienced the fatigue, short temper and lack of focus that often follow a poor night’s sleep.

Take a moment to imagine instead, waking up every day feeling refreshed, excited and enthusiastic about the day ahead, with all the energy you require to do, not only everything that you need to do, but also the things that you would like to do and often don’t have the time or the energy to do. If there are others in your household imagine everyone feeling good.

NHS choices lists seven ways in which a good night’s sleep can boost your health including how it can help prevent diabetes and ward off heart disease.  It is really important to sleep well.

If a new product was invented that offered all the benefits of good sleep, my guess is that it would be very very expensive and we would all want one!  The good news is that we can sleep for free.

Sometimes it can be difficult to get to sleep and/or to get the amount of quality sleep that we need.

From time to time, we may need to invest some time and energy to improve things.

There is lots of really good helpful information on the internet, some of it is a bit dry and could be considered a bit of a bore…yawn…yawn…yawn.  Often discovering a couple of simple tips and making a few minor changes can make a huge difference.

What about the children in our lives? Even if you don’t have children living with you, in flats, terrace houses the sound of bedtime tantrums travels through the walls.  Family, friends or neighbours children need to be able to get to sleep, if they don’t not only is it detrimental to them, it really impacts those around them.

If you are looking for something a bit different that’s natural, safe and fun – look no further than this new bedtime story book for children, Sam the Sleepy Sheep

Sam the Sleepy Sheep

The authors, Dr Kate Beaven-Marks (CNHC registrant), and Rory Z Fulcher designed the story of Sam the Sleepy Sheep so that it is easy-to-understand for children (and parents) of all ages.

This book works using special, sleep-inducing language patterns that help children to relax and feel tired, whilst keeping them engaged with a wonderful story and loveable characters.

Children will yawn…yawn…yawn…and drift gently off to sleep, adults will be able to have a quiet relaxing evening.

Read this bedtime story and transform your evenings and the mental and physical health of those you read to.  Easy.

I urge you to consider what changes you can to make to ensure that you and those around you get all the benefits from being able to go to sleep at the end of the day and get the amount of quality sleep you need.

At this time of year many people are thinking of New Year’s Resolutions.  It feels like a good time to review the amount of and quality of sleep that you and those close to you are getting.  Identify the changes you would like to make and take action now. Imagine how good you will feel, you will be energised and be able to focus on the things you want to do. You will be successful.

Sleep well.

 End of lecture.

If you come across something which actually is awesome, how do you describe it?

Double awesome, amazing, incredible, truly awesome..….I don’t know.  I sat next to the man responsible for developing this Apple app  last week.  I can’t rate it highly enough.

Clare K apples

This app teaches you to take yourself into self hypnosis, how cool is that. Not only that, but once you master self hypnosis you can then use it to motivate yourself to achieve your goals and deal with a range of other issues.

Learning self hypnosis using this Apple app is completely free of charge.

If you haven’t experienced hypnosis before and you aren’t familiar with the feeling of deep relaxation if brings, you might prefer to have a session or two of hypnosis with a hypnotherapist first to help guide you on your way.  If you wish to book an appointment with Patrick Browning, he works in central London.

Learning self hypnosis is free, other downloads are just £2.99 each.  Options include Relax into sleep, Headache relief, Nail biting and Motivation.

This wasn’t the first time I had met Patrick, I met him many years ago in Nottingham; I was working at Macmillan Cancer Support at the time.  He led a group hypnosis session at our Staff Conference.  It was so relaxing and beneficial I purchased one of Patrick’s CDs.  I have since trained as a hypnotherapist myself, to this day I still often listen to Patrick’s CD for an enhanced experience of self hypnosis.   So you can imagine how delighted I was to be reacquainted with him last week at a James Braid Society meeting  and after all these years I was able to tell him my story.

Patrick has played a key part in my journey, download this Apple app now and see where he takes you.

I would be really interested to hear how you get on. Share your journey with me.
